Family Traditions: Thanksgiving in Idaho

Thanksgiving with my family in Idaho seems to have become a tradition and we have lots of fun. It so nice to have all of the family together...well most of the family because my brother Hyrum is still on his mission in Argentina. We all drove all day Wednesday.  There was a HUGE storm that went all the way through Tahoe to Idaho for a couple days before and the roads were very dangerous.  We actually considered staying home because the weather was so bad this week, but decided to go for it when the storm broke for that one day or so in between.  Going over the pass both on the way there and the way back was MISERABLE!  Lots of Traffic and slushy roads that kept splashing and freezing over our windshield so we couldn't see.  A 3 hour drive to Reno turned into a 7 hour drive, making our total trip a 15 hour drive!

Sadie looks like she is up to something, right?  :)

The 3 kiddos all lined up in the Truck

All that snow did make for some fun times for the kids though, and the first thing the kids wanted to do on Thursday when they woke up was PLAY IN THE SNOW!  Its not too often that there is this much snow at this time of year in Idaho!  So we broke out the snow clothes tubs we brought, made a couple trips to Walmart to get the stuff we didn't have or was the wrong size, and went out to the snow for some fun and games!

My little brothers had previously made an igloo, and everyone loved playing in and on it!

Mackenzie, Aubrey and Naomi, apparently not interested in looking at the camera!

Braden, king of the igloo!

Poor Mackenzie couldn't figure out what the cold white stuff was and kept calling the snow "sand".  I wonder if it could be because Jason buried her in it like you would do with the sand at the beach?!

She was in there forever too!  After a while Jason came back and finished making a car sculpted from the snow around her.  Aubrey and Naomi tried to help too...

Here is Sadie in the snow:

Everyone got into a game of snow tag:

After playing in the snow and the kids getting good and cold (that cured them of wanting to play in the snow for a while!) we got to business and started our thanksgiving feast.
All of the food was DELICIOUS!!!!  I tried a new recipe and made a beer butt turkey and even though my family was sceptical of cooking with alcohol, they all admitted it was the best and moistest turkey they'd ever had!  Mom, Keila, and Mary made the side dishes and Patty made the desserts.  I wish I would have taken a picture of all the food we had, but the camera battery died.  The guys came up with the idea to check everyone's weight before and after dinner.  I wasn't too excited about this game. I fell for the oldest trick in the book and about had a heart attach when we took my "before" weight because Jason had put his foot on the scale behind me, raising my weight much more than I thought it should be.  Being pregnant, I expected to have gained weight since my last weigh in about a month ago but not THAT much!!  I think everyone had gained around 3-5 pounds, I think that Glenden was the one that "won".

The next day the guys went out for some practice shooting on the farm. I guess that's becoming a tradition too, because they did this last year as well.

They had a little too much fun driving in the snow as well.  I guess they must have over estimated the truck's abilities!

That afternoon when they finally got back, we all went to see the movie "Tangled".   It was really cute and the kids especially loved it.

We had a great time, even though it was a short and quick trip.  We left on Saturday and tried to beat the next storm, but ended up driving through a couple hours of it in Nevada.  We saw a couple vehicles that had slid off the road and at some points along the road we couldn't even see where the lines on the road should be!  But we did make it to Reno that night and stayed at The Grand Sierra so we could head up the mountains and get our tree the next morning.  The hotel was ok.  $100 after tax for the night for a standard room.  More on our tree farm visit in the next post...
